First Shi’ite Mosque in Denmark

With the construction of the first Shi’ite mosque underway in Copenhagen, the 46-year long wish of Muslims in Denmark is being realized.

Head of the Imam Ali (AS) Islamic Center in Denmark Hojatoleslam Khademi while visiting the ongoing mosque construction along with head of Iran Chamber of Commerce Gholamhossein Shafei and the accompanying business delegation said, the mosque is named Ali ibn Abi Talib (AS).

This is the first mosque to be built among the Scandinavian countries by Shia Muslims and it will also be a place for Islamic activities, IRNA reported.

“There was remarkable resistance on the part of different organizations in Denmark to prevent the mosque construction. During the past four decades, many representatives from Muslim countries had been urging for the mosque, but to no avail,” added Khademi.

The mosque has three floors, and includes a seminary, school, conference hall, and library to make it the biggest mosque in the Scandinavian region. The mosque occupies an area of about 4000 square meters and is located in Greater Copenhagen, a posh district of the capital. It will be fully functional by 2015.

At the end of the visit, Shafei and his delegation presented their contributions for the completion of the construction.

The dream of an Islamic center for all Muslims regardless of background, culture, race, ethnicity or creed was realized in 1994 through hard work and endless support of Hojatoleslam Seyyed Mohammad-Mehdi Khademi through unification of three Islamic centers of Mohammadiah, Al Mustafa and Lebanese Islamic centers and Mosques into one Imam Ali (AS) Islamic Center.

The center’s main focus is on Islam, which unites millions of people worldwide regardless of race, ethnicity, color, language or background.
