Comma Art Gallery is to host a collection of photos taken by four Iranian cineastes.
According to the Persian website of Mehr News Agency, the 10-day event in Tehran, set to open June 22, will display works of Ebrahim Golestan, Kamran Shirdel, Nasser Taghvai and Majid Barzegar.
Filmmaker, producer and writer Golestan, 95, is mostly known for satirical comedy Secrets of the Treasure of the Jinn Valley (1974) and the drama The Brick and Mirror (1965).
Documentarian Kamran Shirdel, 79, studied architecture at the Università di Roma and film direction at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, where he was introduced to Italian neo-realist filmmakers and the work of Pier Paolo Pasolini and Michelangelo Antonioni.
Like the neo-realists, Shirdel sought to make films that reflected the common people and adopted a style of filmmaking shot in the streets using non-actors. Among his works are the black and white shorts The Night It Rained and Women’s Prison.
Nasser Taghvai, 76, is a well-known filmmaker whose works have gained global critical acclaim. Captain Khorshid, an adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s “To Have and Have Not”, is considered one of the best Iranian films by critics that won the Bronze Leopard for Taghvai at the 48th Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland in 1988.
Since 1990, the critically acclaimed Iranian filmmaker and producer, Majid Barzegar, 45, has been involved in the production of independent short and feature films. Most of his films have been seen in international film festivals including Berlinale, San Sebastian Film Festival, Rotterdam Film Festival, São Paulo Film Festival and Thessaloniki Film Festival. Rainy Seasons (2010), Parviz (2012) and A Very Ordinary Citizen (2015) are his three directorial works. The exhibit will unveil a never-before-exhibited photo by Mirza Ebrahim Khan Akasbashi (1874–1915), the royal court photographer of Mozaffar ad-Din Shah Qajar, the king of Persia.
