The traditional Moshtaq Ensemble will perform a classical concert at Vahdat Hall in Tehran on the 27th and 29th of June.
Mehrdad Karim-Khavari is the founder and leader of the band, known for its large number of daf players. He also plays percussion instruments with his brother Fardin who is on tar and setar.
The two will improvise musical pieces in the first half of the show, Iranconcert reported.
Accompanied by sounds of tonbak, dhol and cymbal (played by Mehrdad), 60 daf players will perform Mehrdad’s compositions in the second part of the concert.
Founded in 1997, the group has held dozens of concerts in domestic and foreign countries. Mehrdad has also written a 3-volume guidebook on playing daf.
Daf is a large Middle Eastern frame drum used in pop and classical music. The frame is usually made of hardwood with many metal ringlets attached, and the membrane is made of animal skin. It is mostly played in the Middle East, Iran, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia. The venue is located at Shahriar St., Hafez Ave. Tickets to the event are available at Iranconcert.com.
