President Joseph Kabila will be unable to change the country’s constitution to extend his mandate for a third term. He will step down after elections are held in 2017.
These are the major points from a deal reached in the Democratic Republic of Congo over the political situation in the country, Africanews reported.
According to the lead mediator of the negotiations under the aegis of the National Episcopal Conference of the Congo, Marcel Utembi, the political parties agreed to the deal on Friday.
“All the obstacles are lifted, the differences are smoothed out, the smoke is bleaching,” said Father Donatien Nshole, spokesman for CENCO after the meeting.
“We are stopping the practical modalities of signing the agreement by the parties this night or tomorrow morning” at a plenary meeting of the negotiators.”
The church, which leads the mediation between the government and the opposition in the DRC, assured that “all the obstacles were lifted” for the signing of the deal latest by Saturday.
The deal is expected to be the exit door of the crisis triggered by the continued stay in power of Joseph Kabila beyond his mandate.
Negotiations had been interrupted before Christmas for lack of understanding between the parties but resumed in camera on January 1.
