Grandmaster Maghsoodloo Dominates Masters Cup

Young grandmaster of Iran Parham Maghsoodloo stood first in the second Sharjah Masters International Championships in Sharjah, the UAE, on Friday.

His points were enough to acquire the gold medal with one last match to spare, IRNA reported.

On his path to victory, Maghsoodloo beat Chao Sun of China with the rating of 2041; Nutakki Priyanka from India with 1975 rating, Russian grandmaster Vladislav Artemiev rated 2071, Wang Hao Chinese Grandmaster rated 2707, SP Sethuraman of India rated 2631, and the  grandmaster from the UK, Gawain Jones, among other grandmasters. 

Maghsoodloo is currently rated with 2615 on the World Chess Federation website, Fide.com.

The tournament attracted 32 grandmasters (23 of them above 2600 and five above 2700 rating) and 16 international masters from 28 countries. The tournament carries a cash prize of $57,000.

In one of his latest performances, Maghsoodloo finished first at the 3rd Wealth Mumbai International Open in Mumbai, India, in January.

Maghsoodloo, 17, was awarded the title of grandmaster by the World Chess Federation in 2016, the same year he won the title of international master, the federation website wrote.

He played in the Chess World Cup 2015, and represented the country at the 42nd Chess Olympiad in 2016. He won the Iranian Chess Championship last year.
